Daily Mail: German MEP says European Army WILL now happen thanks to Brexit
The british newspaper Daily Mail (23 November 2016, www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3964910/German-MEP-says-European-Army-happen-thanks-Brexit-Britain-thing-stopping-Germany-France-s-plans.html) covers the vote in favour of the Implementation of the Common Security and Defence Policy in Strasbourg:
"A German MEP has claimed Brexit could remove the 'brake' which was stopping the French and German governments pressing ahead with plans for a European Army.
Yesterday the European Parliament voted in favour of plans which would cut through red tape and allow NATO forces to be deployed quicker in the event of a crisis and bolster defences against Russian aggression in eastern Europe.
But Sabine Lösing, an MEP who represents Lower Saxony, told Mail Online: 'Britain was the brake. Here in the European Parliament that was very clear and I have seen them block it.
'If the UK is not here any more they will not be here to argue there is no need for this.'
Ms Lösing, who represents the Left-wing Die Linke party - which is descended from the old East German communist party, said she was opposed to all militarisation.
But she said the British argument had always been that NATO was the right place for a defence union and there was no need for the EU to increase defence spending."
